Since 1973,the Apprenticeship training of Engineering Degree & Diploma holders was brought under the purview of Apprentices Act 1961 by Apprentices (Amendment) Act 1973. Subsequently, in 1986 the Apprenticeship training of 10+2 passed Vocational stream candidates was also brought under the purview of the Act by amendment in Apprentices Act 1961.

In this Scheme, a limited number of Graduates and Diploma holders in Engineering / Technology were trained in the Industries for Practical Training on a monthly Stipend.

The new IIMs or the 3rd generation of IIMs are IIM Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), IIM Bodh Gaya (Bihar), IIM Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), IIM Nagpur (Maharashtra), IIM Sambalpur (Odisha) and IIM Amritsar (Punjab).
