State Board of Technical Education has been constituted vide govt. order no. 75/Dir dated 31st May, 1955 under the Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of Bihar, Patna.

Technical Education in India has a history of over 150 years. In India, it has its root in Uttarakhand as the first ever Engineering College in India which was established in 1847 at Roorkee, now it is one of the IITs. During the post independence period there has been phenomenal expansion of Technical Education in the country. Initiatives are being taken to further strengthen the Technical Education system in terms of quality and quantity. Technical Education is offered through 4-tier education system

The role of higher education in sustainable economic and social development increase year by year and this will continue over the next decades. Higher education can be seen as a focal point of knowledge and its application, an institution which makes a great contribution to the economic growth and development through fostering innovation and increasing higher skills.

The first Engineering Institution to be started in the country was the Survey School, which was established in 1794 at Madras by the East India Company. Out of this, the reputed College of Engineering Guindy, Chennai has come into existence. The output of the Engineering Institutions in the country was not commensurate with the demand in the then developing India and the Industrialization all over India necessitated the expansion of the Technical Institutions at all levels during the Five Year Plans.

With the ever increasing rate of unemployment, focus is now more on Technical education wherein more and more students are opting to take up technical and professional courses as a means of finding gainful employment. Technical Educational Institutes are now offering a very diverse set of courses aimed at meeting the demand and need of the times and other occupational based courses for producing technical manpower for social economic development of the state and country as a whole.
