Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are a group of Multidisciplinary Technical Universities of higher education in India, focused on Information Technology Engineering. Five of them are established, funded and managed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The rest are set up on the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Prior to 2013, the IIITs at Gwalior, Allahabad, Jabalpur and Kancheepuram were set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

In 2013 the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Bill 2013 was introduced in Lok Sabha.The bill sought to grants the status of Institutes of National Importance (INI) upon the four IIITs. After much debate and changes, the bill was passed by the Parliament on 1 December 2014 and published as Indian Institutes of Information Technology Act, 2014 on 8 December 2014, coming into effect on 5 January 2015.

Admission

Admissions into undergraduate programmes in IIITs for 4,000 seats are through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority and JEE-Main.[20] For postgraduate programs admission is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

IIIT Kota is a joint venture of the Ministry of Education (MoE) Govt. of India and Govt. of Rajasthan with Industry Partners in Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model. IIIT Kota was established in 2013. Currently, the institute is mentored by Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur (MNIT Jaipur) and is situated at MNIT Jaipur. The main site of IIIT, Kota shall be constructed at Ranpur near Kota on 100.37 acres of land made available by the Govt. of Rajasthan.
